Failing to build mozilla from trunk

After logging an issue on GitHub and wanting to send a PR #634, I forked the Komodo Edit project, cloned it and began a build to test some changes. The probem is that mozila fails to build. I have tried

cd komodo/mozilla
python build.py configure -k 9.10
python build.py distclean all

and

cd komodo/mozilla
python build.py configure -k 9.0 --with-crashreport-symbols
python build.py distclean all

and both ways produce the following:

I have tried searching on Google and there are a number of reports of others having a similar error, when building the non-Komodo build of Mozila, but I am unable to find a solution to the problem.

I have checked all the dependencies and all the versions match those documented.

I am using Fedora 22 which is kept up to date with dnf.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

It looks like you got the Python traceback part of the error, but not the compiler error itself. However, I’m not sure if compiler errors are being reported to stderr. If there is any more error messages above the snippet you posted, please post them here.

Seems like the version of Mozilla we use is not compatible with the latest ccache version: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1105090

We may want to look into backporting that version, although it has not really affected us thus far. You could downgrade your ccache version or build Komodo with Docker (which is what I do).

Note I believe the Docker steps may be missing a step or 2, please feel free to bug me if you run into issues (we’re on IRC - #komodo at irc.mozilla.lorg).

@mitchell There are no errors previous to the snippet that I posted.

@nathanr This is the info for ccache on my system

[root@tyr autoconf-2.13]# dnf info ccache

Description : ccache is a compiler cache. It speeds up recompilation of C/C++ code
: by caching previous compiles and detecting when the same compile is
: being done again. The main focus is to handle the GNU C/C++ compiler
: (GCC), but it may also work with compilers that mimic GCC good enough.

Do you know what version I would need to downgrade to? 3.1.x I am guessing?

Hmm, an rpm search shows that there is no Fedora 22 ccache below v3.2.1

So I downloaded the source for ccache 3.1.10 and compiled it fine,

Doh!

I guess I will have to look at Docker next.

@nathanr What are the chances of getting the fix backported?

Here’s a ccache 3.2.1 RPM for Fedora 21, chances are it’ll work on Fedora 22 as well:

ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/fedora/linux/releases/21/Everything/x86_64/os/Packages/c/ccache-3.1.10-1.fc21.x86_64.rpm

Honestly Docker may be the better approach though. It doesn’t seem affect performance at all.

Chances of getting it backported are pretty low as we are not affected by the issue ourselves and it could potentially take a significant chunk of time (building mozilla takes a while, so it’s not easy to test).

That said, the patch looks pretty simple, you could try backporting it yourself:

https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/rev/7f34fc3870ba

(only the building.py change is relevant).

Well, I’ve manually installed ccache 3.1.10 at the moment and running a build with it to see what happens (twiddles his thumbs). I may try the patch too. Are you interested in the diff file if it works, I guess it is not something that you want to apply to your repo for all?

I’d definitely be interested, but we wouldn’t apply it until we have the time to properly test it.

Ok, build failed with 3.1.10, same error:a bit strange

I going to remove that manual install of ccache and dnf install the current version back into place and then try build with the patch.

Applied the patch and ran a build, failed

So it seems to have changed the failure as ccache now reports

2:10.50 ccache (direct) hit rate: 4.0%; (preprocessed) hit rate: 40.0%; miss rate: 56.0%

but there is clearly more to it than just that patch. Moving onto Docker.

So it went reasonably well with docker until I got to:

Ahh, sorry. komodo is the password for root in the docklet.
And why are you using root to ssh into docklet? Do it by your own user, don’t use root for it. Do ls -l in <komodo source>/util/docker/.

Ah, didn’t notice I was logged in as root at that time, been logged in as user previously.
